Dark Girls on OWN
Did
anyone watch OWN last night? I watched two amazing shows, Next Chapter
with African American Women in Hollywood and Dark Girls. It was hard
seeing our “secrets” displayed for the world to see. For example, the
paper bag test. We know what that is, but many other races didn’t. As a
dark skin women, I learned at 4 years old, people would not like me
because I was black but some of my people won’t like me because I was
darker than a paper bag. At that point, I had to learn how to love
myself despite what others may say. I had to be faster or smarter than
the next person because they expect for me not to be. I had to turn the
other cheek and smile to discrimination, not to be perceived as the
“angry black woman” and I had to be ok with my black men, treating me
like I wasn’t good enough to be “loyal” to my race. What is all comes
down to is self love. Not excepting disrespect and handing uncomfortable
moments with grace and strength. I hope some people learned from
watching these shows so the next generation of black kids don’t have the
same experiences some of have… Thoughts?
